Wildfires Burning

Wildfires have been burning throughout southern California for the last four days. About a million people are displaced from their homes at this point. There are 10,000 firefighters fighting the blaze right now. There are now over 12,000 people sheltered at Qualcomm Stadium, the place where the San Diego Chargers (NFL team) play.

There are 20 different fires burning currently. The flames have burned 400,000 acres of land and 1,500 homes so far. President Bush has declared the fires to be a major disaster. The blazes have killed five people and injured at least 70 more. Thirty-four firefighters have also been hurt. In addition to the damage the fires have encurred around San Diego there is also heavy ash and smoke smothering the city of Tijuana in northern Mexico, which is directly across the border from San Diego.

How do you feel about these fires? Do you feel sadness for the people that have lost their homes or do you have the attitude of "that's life"? Click here and then select the video titled, "Last Home Standing" to watch a video about a couple whose house was left unharmed by the fires. Compare and contrast their feelings with those of their neighbors who lost their homes.

I think that the fire is that is currently happening in southern California is a very dangerous place to be! Not just for the people who lived there but for the fire fighters who are risking there lives to take out the fire!

I agree it is dangerous, especially since the winds are very strong so the fire changes directions and moves quickly.

Hey I have a question about the wildfire. Is the fire just fire or is it something like globle worming

Sandra V said...

I thinke that globle worming is changeing and all states. Is hade to stope the firs because the winds are to strong.

well i think thats happening becuse of globle warming and we have to find some thing to stop it

this story is very importan because people in california need to know this

Mr. Bolony. The fires have little to do with global warming although the gases given off by the fires do pollute the air. The fires are caused by lack of rain and high winds, although the lack of rain could be a result of climate change (global warming).

I agree it is dangerous because of the every strong winds and so the fire changes directions really fast and it also moves very quickly to aother directions.

In my opinion, it's a natural phenomena and these things are inevitable however, we are supposed to care about the people who are involved in this catastrophe and help them in order to overcome the difficulties.

i think the fire is going to get worst from so much wind, and when the fire gets worst they will need more people to help out.I feel bad for all the peoples houses that burned down, but i am happy for the people that had the last house standing.

Mr. Enns said...

Gas prices are going up, if that's what you mean David? Not sure if that has anything to do with the fires though.

I think the fire is happening because of the nature its nature problem and its very dangerous because if theirs wind it changes directions and starts buring something else

Well fire could be stopped but the houses were burned down cant be fixed easily. The fire are stopping day by day but there are still fires around there. If the fire get bigger and then people should move somewhere safely.

i feel sad for the people that lost all of their things and the house too. I hope thaut they had insurance and that they will pay their house.

Mr. Enns said...

Many did not have insurance against fire I'm sure and also those that did have insurance may not have had enough coverage for the entire cost of rebuilding their house. It is sad because this will cause a lot of stress in these families
However, the other day I heard someone say that a home is not a house but it is "a family that is together and cares for one another." So by that definition even if your house burns to the ground you still have a home if your family remains together.

I think we should be heping these people because their houses burned down and they dont have anywhere else to live so the close states what are by California should be helping the to give them money to build a new home.
